In Music for Three Violins and Piano, I decided to experiment with depictions of three different senses of time. The first, which is presented as the opening and closing material, consists of a passionate exchange between the violins and piano, but it lacks any kind of direction or momentum. The second is a sort of indifferent, meandering music that the piano finds itself restricted to for much of the piece, and the third is a lyrical, expressive violin melody that gradually develops as the work unfolds.
